Early 70s Carlton BB - 26 or 24TPI?

I have an early 70s Carlton Continental which I'm hoping to upgrade with a double chainring. Since I doubt I'd be able to find a longer spindle for the bottom bracket, I'd ideally like to fit a new one.

The question is . . . . . after Raleigh took over Carlton, did they start using those funny 26TPI bottom brackets?

If anyone has any ideas or experience, I'd be very grateful! I'd quite like to have a fair idea of what I'm getting myself into before I start knocking out the cotters! :?

I don't know when Raleigh took over Carlton, but it's a standard English BB on my '64 Continental

This might be a useful place to ask

I think it was 1960, so going on the evidence from your '64 bike, it doesn't appear that they instantly switched (if indeed they did switch).

Thanks for the link to the Raleigh Forum - might try my luck there too. :D
