I live near Amersham, which is more or less on the straightline route from you to Oxford. I find Amersham-Hyde Heath-Great Missenden-Cadsden-Askett-Longwick-Thame-Shabbington-Worminghall-Stanton St John-Headington-Oxford a good route, (apart from an annoying stretch on the A418 just west of Thame). Getting from where you are to Amersham (or Chesham, an equally good starting point) I have rather less familiarity with.

+1 to above but miss out the fast A road section to Thame by going Askett, Ford, Dinton, Cuddington, Chearsey & Long Crendon.

Only a couple of miles further but a better & quieter alternative IMHO.

EDIT: From Potters Bar, have a look at S Mimms, Shenley, Colney St., Chiswell Green, Bedmond, Kings Langley, Chipperfield to Chesham
