Off the Snake Pass

I am going up to the Peak District early next week and plan to cycle over the A57 Snake Pass from the resevoirs to Glossop. I'm familiar with the road but have noticed a bridleway from Doctor's Gate Culvert (SK096928) which meets the road in Old Glossop at SK045948. I am a bit old fashioned and ride a 1970s touring bike and generally prefer a good hard surface but can handle the average forest track or fine stones but don't like great lumps of rock, big holes, large tree routes or sudden soft bits. Have any members here riden this bridleway and can tell me what the surface is like? As I'm planning to cycle there it will almost certainly be raining hard and the ground will be wet:-)

I really would not advise going down there on anything but a rugged mountain bike with decent brakes and knobbly tyres.

Wow, thanks chaps. I think I'll give that one a miss! The Snake would be a wonderful ride if it wasn't so busy with traffic.

Well I came over the Snake Pass this morning in bright sunshine and guess what? It's closed to traffic from today until Wednesday, just because they're re-doing the road markings! It was an amazing experience with nothing on the road bar a few marking machines and several other cyclists riding over. If you're thinking of doing the Snake Pass, get up there before Thursday. BYW the wind is blowing from the Glossop end!
