Bus lanes usage in London

Can anyone tell me if bikes are allowed to use the bus lanes at all times? Does it have to specifically be sign posted that cyclists are allowed? Not sure as sometimes there are signs, sometimes they are not there and other times it says "No entry except buses"

I am more interested in knowing what the actual rules are - we are from Canada and I have not been able to find the actual rules regarding this on line anywhere.

Well, there does have to be a sign, but you can be pretty safe in assuming that all with flow bus lanes permit bikes. There are, however, some counterflow bus lanes, for example along Piccadilly. On Picadilly only buses can go westbound. London's counterlow lanes usually forbid bikes.
The sign is pictorial, a big blue notice, showing each kind of vehicle permitted in the lane, and the times when the lane operates.
Some bus lanes now also permit motorcycles, and I think there is at least one which permits trucks.
