This morning's eye opener!

I was a few minutes into my commute when I went over a minor bump (nothing remarkable) and my front mudguard broke and fouled the wheel

Both sets of rivets that secure the stays to the guard had broken free... I don't think I've had them much over a year so it's a bit of a shocker.

Pity I was on the way to work, as I just binned the guard instead of sending it back. Still, considering SKS guards are supposed to be the bee's knees... :?

Hmm. Why didn't I think of just drilling it through?

If I can remember which bin I stuffed it in, maybe I'll go and fish it out on the way home! 8)

If you carry a couple of cable ties in with your tools/puncture kit you can quickly re-attach the mudguard to the stay bridge.

The stainless steel bracket broke on my rear 'guard. It snapped across where the stay attaches. I've tryed loads of ways to re attach it but it keeps rattling. I've pretty much given up now and just use a red elastic band pulled over to the other side across the top of the 'guard. There's almost always another red elastic band around on the road when it wears out!

The cable tie tips a good one. I've got a couple of reusable ones with a little tab to undo them. Can't find em anywhere now, live in fear of loosing them. Did get some velcro style ones from maplin, can wrap em round a frame tube till needed.

Another top tip from one of the MTB magazines was wrap a length of ducting tape around your pump barrel. It'll re stick well enough for a host of emergencies and can even work as a (very) short term tyre boot (change every so often).

Amazing how you can make do. last year had a tyre blow on one of my old bikes and used an old cig packet out of the gutter to seal the tear in the tyre for the 20ml ride home. Put the bike away and forgot about it. I kept using the bike for the odd run for 6 months till I remembered [Doohh] the cardboard was still in there and changed the tyre. Pressure was still fine. Amazing.
