Re: Why so few touring bikes have prop stands?

I like to keep weight to a minimum on all my bikes, and I can manage perfectly well without a stand, so I don't have one.

Panniered up, the bike is perfectly happy lying on the floor as long as I lower it gently. It's certainly happier than it would be if it fell off the stand.

I agree.
Of course you have to be careful how they're used, in the same way as you would propping a bike against a lamp post. They're out of place on a lightweight but for utility and touring bikes a stand is invaluable.

I had one of those Esge two-legged jobs on my Dawes Galaxy some years ago. One day it fell over and the attachment of the Esge dented the chainstays of the bike. I took it off and never used it again.

I have an Esge chainstay mounted single leg prop stand on my tourer. Its been on for about 10 years and it works very well. Its saved the frame and saddle from much damage. I had a bottom bracket mounted prior to the present one and it got in the way of the pedals if wheeled backwards. I also felt it was less stable.
The propstand is mounted on the left chainstay and when I park the the bike I turn the handlebars to the right and its very stable.

I am looking for a prop stand like the ones illustrated on the attached photographes I took. One was seen belonging to a German rider during my visit to Riva Del Garda in northern Italy and the other seen in Bala north Wales but again on a touring visitor from Denmark. I am looking for one with the sliding extension that will allow it to fit and clear the rear disc brake assembly. Why are the mainland Europeans so far head in their thinking?
