Has It Been Windier This Year?

To me, it seems to have been a very windy summer. In the SE we seem to have had more easterlies than normaI and plenty of days where the Shipping Forecast has been Force 5 and 6 - a bit strong for summer - and quite a few 8s and even 10s. I haver tried to find stats to support or otherwise my impression but haven't yet tracked then down.

What do other people think, windier or not?

Notes from my training log 2009:

Channel Islands
07 June - "Drizzle & windy, a bit cold......."
20 June - "Sunny, S/W wind ......"
12 July - "Sunny, Strong S/W wind"
15 July - "S/W wind but sunny and warm"
19 July - "Strong S/W wind, flew along coast road"

Depart France/Spain

24 August - Orleans - Tours -" roaring headwind....."
25 August - Tours - la Fleche - "Head down into a headwind looking at tarmac."

Being an island we get our fair share of wind so I only note it in my training log if it is out of the ordinary. I actually really enjoy a good S/W wind or a N/E as it means you can work it to have a massive tailwind along the flat coast road which is quite fun ! Anyway hope this helps.

Funny that, I had the same thought last week but put it down to being older/weaker/grumpier - but I would say yes for what it's worth.

Maybe not stronger winds perhaps, but less still days I think (also in SE)

We had the same discussion on last Sunday's club run and the general concensus was that yes, it has been even windier. The wind never seems to stop blowing in Suffolk anyway, but this year it's been even worse.

In general, yes!
had some awful strong winds during July when holidaying in the south, and on one occasion seriously struggled with getting the tent up, but it was also chilly despite the sunshine.
That was before I add in all the nasty winds of winter and spring.
However i also race and we have had some amazing weekends in the past few weeks where the wind has dropped at the weekend or part of it and some amazing times have been achieved with national records being broken. Only today I have come away from an event where there were a vast number of very happy :D faces with lots of "personal bests" or best rides for several years.

Despite all the comments on the LEJOG board there was a strong S or SW wind all the way home on my Scottish escapade. We all know Sod's Law of Cycling:- Whichever direction you travel, and whichever way the wind blows, it's always in your face. :(
