South of France - which bike to take ?

Post by Bill D »

My wife and I are renting a place near St Maxime for 6 weeks next March/April. I can only take one bike: road or mtb? Anyone know the area?

I would take my MTB and a pair of slick tyres for longer road rides

In our part of France, the Haute Vienne, there are a large number of roads that are little more than rough tracks unsuited to narrow tyres or even 700cx28 really. I use my tourer which is part mtb in being able to take 26 inch tyres up to 1.9 inches wide (it might even take 2.0) and in being a low-geared triple. The tyres i use are actually 1.75 Panaracers and I find these an excellent tyre for road and rough-stuff.

Me too. Or I would if I still had a mountain bike - maybe some knobblies for my hybrid?
Cynic? No, an optimist tempered by experience.
