6-speed screw-on freewheel

Post by niloc »

After only 2000 miles again it's time I replaced the chain and screw on freewheel on my commuter. I normally buy a SRAM chain (PC850) and a Shimano 6 speed Tourney. But DAK if there is any difference in the quality between the various Shimano screw on freewheels - or should I just buy the cheapest?

Sadly, these days freewheels are all bottom-end components and I doubt if there is much difference between them.

I'd go for cheap Shimano. The lifespan is a bit of a lottery anyway, cheap or expensive. One bad immersion in muddy, gritty water can ruin an expensive freewheel.

I noticed this one the other day:

A bit expensive, and a bit close ratio, but I'd imagine the quality will be high.

In the old days, I had a New Winner Pro freewheel, it was sealed from the weather and a great bit of kit.
I sold it a year or two ago.

I run a number of bikes with screw on freewheels and my advice is only buy a Shimano one. The cheap unbranded ones fail and that is very inconvenient! I would upgrade to 7 speed if you can as there is a greater choice (including the Megarange with Granny gear!)

Interloc Racing Design has better quality freewheels than the sunrace/shimanos.
Old stock Suntours are good too.

Suntour are good if you dribble oil into them regularly. The old ones Mick remembers were sealed for life with grease for soggy Britain, the current ones are from a modified design mainly sold in the US where they don't ride in the rain. Normally I tend to be a bit of a Luddite but that was one reason I finally ditched all our 6 speed equipment and re-standardised on 9 speed.
If at first you don't succeed - cheat!!

You can get Interloc freewheels here in the uk now. Quality ones are rare nowadays.
