Malaga - Andalucia roads?

Post by lloyd »

I’m doing a road tour in Andalucia next month from Malaga, yet to decide on an itinerary but will almost certainly include the C345 road heading out of Malaga in the direction of Granada. This road seems to have two loops with the road going under each other twice, must be either a fly over or a tunnel. Anyone known which, and if the latter is the tunnel lit?

Also as we arrive late in the day in Malaga we will be staying there the first night, I notice there’s a train from the airport into the city. Does anyone know if you can take bikes on it?

I recall it being tunnelled and not requiring lights. Its a very scenic road.
Enjoy.

Lloyd, the ctc web site might help with 'bike on train'.

Try: 'what I need' 'information'

I can confirm that the 2 loops on the C345 between Malaga & the Peurto del Leon are both short tunnels & do not need lights.

The railway from the airport is a local service & I've taken a bike on it. However, you can always check it out with RENFE on 00 34 90 22 40 20 2 (may have to call back a couple of times if you don't speak Spanish).

The route to Granada is covered (in reverse) in Cycle Touring in Spain (Cicerone Press).

Have a great time - superb part of the world

Thanks for the above info. CTC link wise I was only able to find a link to bikes on italian trains but not worry as Cyclista suggests it should be ok.

For anyone interested the above mentioned road above Malaga into the mountains is a super climb. A nice gradient, one of many in the area. There were a couple of very short tunnels.

Generally the condition of many of the roads in Andalucia (did a loop to Granada and Ronda from Malaga) was quite poor, certainly didn't regret taking the mtn bike with slicks.

Bikes on the airport train weren't a prob on the way into Malaga (station wasn't manned in any case), but on returning from the centre of Malaga we had a problem and were refused entry, the very jobs worth officials pointing to a sign banning bikes. We simply got on at the second & main station 500 yards away without any probs.

Hi,
if you have time-do go to Ronda, its a super place to stop over and well worth the effort.
Also try to see the Alhambra palace in Granada, I think entry is all ticket now so you may need to book in advance.

Me and the wife rode Malaga-Ronda-Gibralter-Ronda-Granada-Malaga over 2 weeks with rest days all on spec over a Whit week and it was very hot on the climbs even at that time of year
