has anyone any experience of cycle trailers for a dog. i.e. do they cause any problems going downhill / uphill / cornering. can they cause damage to the bike itself. in short what are the disadvantages?

I have no personal experience but I have seen one in use - hooded child trailer type. I suggest that is the clue, depending on size of dog it will be not much different to carrying a child. Then, depending on controlability of dog, not much different from carrying some children. Mick Agar

Likewise no experience, but I've seen a dog on a tandem. No wasn't pedalling but was parked ina basket on the rear pannier. Very happy it was too, but not a big pooch.

I knew someone who managed to reach quite a high ranking in canoe slalom using a double canadian with their dog in the front, competing against similar boats with 2 humans.

There are a couple of makers of bicycle trailers specificaly for dogs. Croozer, who are distributed in the UK by Amba Marketing make a fabric tent style of dog trailer. See
http://www.bikesandtrailers.com/dog-trailers/croozer_dog.html
for pics and spec, I cant find a reference to this trailer on Ambas web site but I know they can get it.
Carry Freedom make a dog trailer called the bArk, which is an airline dog kennel bolted to their Y-Large trailer chassis.

I work for Carry Freedom so I leave it to you to decide if either of these interest you. Also at the bikes and trailers web site linked to above is a dog trailer for small dogs by Roland. To the best of my knowledge thats it as far as commercially available dog trailers go.
Hope this helps

I use a dog carrier securely attached to my Carry Freedom trailer, it works fine and the dog seems happy enough travelling inside. I put some anti slip rubber mat on the floor of the dog carrier to prevent the dogs cushion from sliding around. Take the box off and you can use the trailer for lots of other things. The trailer is well made and very versatile.

A chum hired a Dog Trailer from D.TEK Trailers and bought one as a result of the trial . The Hound loved it as well !.
Rather a good idea to hire before buying ...with little or no risk if it does not suit you or your dog.
Hope that might help
