£1.99 pump

Post by Mick F »

Is this good value or not?
Do you only get what you pay for?

Lidl are also doing a track pump for £5.99. I bought one a couple of days ago, only used it twice so far but it seems too work very well. A bit too well in fact, I put in 90 psi by mistake instead of 70 psi

I was let down badly by one of these kind of "space-saving" pumps Mick, and had a long walk home. The nozzle on them is also a bit fiddly to hold onto the valve. See my review of the Lezyne pump in Cycling Goods & Services. I know it costs a bit more but it is superbly made and has a super flexible tube with proper screw-on adapter. I've found it every bit as good as a full-sized pump.

Very best of luck getting 120 PSI into your tyres with a mini pump, you'll have arms like Popeye by the time you're up to pressure and awheel again.

It's the evening time, I've got a glass of wine, and tomorrow is another day .......

I doubt I could get 120psi - that's why I use a track pump and CO2 if need be when I'm out on Mercian - but this £1.99 gem may help me out when I'm on the Raleigh Chopper.

Maybe it won't be any good, but I'll have a go.

Decathlon where/are doing a similar priced pump.
As good as any other compact style pump I have used in the past, but a quarter of the price.

Well, I tried it. I completely deflated the front Chopper tyre, then blew it up with my £1.99 pump.

Less than 100 pumps, and very easy pumps at that, and the tyre is back up to pressure. 40psi.

The quality feels good, it appears solid and well-made, but only time and use will tell if I've bought a bargain!

Tesco sell a 99p pump, with lever valve attachment and Presta/Schrader capability. Works well as an on-road emergency pump, it gets up to 90psi fairly quickly .

Is the valve head section of the pump okay? In the picture it looks loose or lop-sided around the red colloar, like it might detatch itself.

"Patented swivel head"

Yes, just my luck tonight, Going to work, put the wrong jacket on minus the pump, inner tube and levers. Only ½ mile away from work place, the front tyres go's soft, dam I thought. Sunday trading meaning the shops close at 4:00pm. Oh well, a lift back home, but will have to either walk or get bus to work and repair that dammed puncture. Even a cheap would of done the trick, lesson learned.

Yes "Patented Swivel Head" worked quite well.

It clipped onto the Scheader valve and as I pumped, the head took out the movement to a degree, leaving the valve fitting relatively undisturbed.

The shop I bought it from is a discount place. They sell 'end of lines', seconds and bankrupt stock and the like. There's often something wrong with whatever you buy - anything from wrong colour to downright broken! You have to be careful. The shop is very good, you can take stuff back weeks later and get a full refund.

Also, what you have to be careful of, is checking the prices. Some things are cheap, and some things aren't. Because of the sort of place it is, you EXPECT to be getting a bargain, but you may not be. My pump, for instance, was on a rack with others of the same make. Some were priced at nearly £4 and were identical except for being a different colour scheme.

Anyway, I'm happy with my purchase, but perhaps I should have bought two!
