Goodness, a bit of idle curiosity on my part has certainly raised some interesting points.....

After my original musings about the use of the forum, there were some comments about the number of female cyclists and this week I've been doing a bit of observing and counting. The ratio of male:female cyclists around here is much higher than 70:30. Last Saturday (which was a nice day) I saw two other ladies on bikes, but at least 20 men (mainly alone, although I did see one trio).

One day this week on the way to work I again saw two more ladies (both on the pavement.) All the other days I only saw men, but I'm beginning to think the numbers of them in the morning are creeping up - come the better weather there should be even more.

I used to see a group of ladies on Saturday mornings - I got onto nodding terms with the leader. I had almost got to the point of stopping them (they were always going the other way to me along a cycle path) and seeing who they were (and if they went slowly enough for me to join them!) when I stopped seeing them. I've tried looking up local groups, and Googling but to no avail. :(

I think almost every other cyclist I see on my rides round here is male, but due to my work hours I almost always ride in the country during the middle of the day on weekdays- I don't know why that should make any difference, but it might.???

The females I have seen cycling have been within the urban area, and have been on the heavier sit-up type of bike with baskets. The rural males are usually on road bikes, with occasionally a mountain bike.

I did come across one female in the country, with her OH, on a cross-type bike. They were just starting to get into cycling.

I suppose then I'd say of the cyclists I see- rural- 99% male (the 1% female being me :? ).
Urban 90% male.

I've always been a fan of the high ratio of male to female cyclists, right back to when I was working in a bike shop, it was always more interesting selling a bike to a fella, and generally easier, unless his missus was with him.

I'm a lady cyclist who tends to lurk on this forum.

I live on the border between North Shropshire and Cheshire. I go to a local cyclists' cafe in Cheshire.
There are lots of women cyclists there. Mostly out with groups of men and mostly the over sixties.

On the roads that go past my door its mostly male roadies. In town there are a lot more female cyclists doing
their shopping on bikes.

I'm female. Like some others, I lurk more than I post.

I have been cycling with varying degrees of seriousness for about 35 years. I am reasonably mechanically able, and confident enough to cycle alone in traffic, haul two kids in a trailer, join a 60-mile club run, patch a puncture in the rain, etc.

I'm not too worried about what other people think (or intimidated by strong opinions). I just don't have time to keep up with the forums I belong to. I keep up with my club forums. I browse a regional forum with some regularity. And I read this one occasionally, use it to get information about a particular topic, and browse the classifieds.

With two small children and full time education, I don't often take the time for more than that. Besides, when I get a little time to myself...well, I'd rather be out on my bike.

I'm female, and have very little interest in shoes. Or handbags. Jewellery, on the other hand, I have a lot of interest in!

I love shoes, unfortunately being a size 9.5 it's an eternal quest to find really nice fashionable ones.(Not impossible though). I also like gadgets and guns though so I guess I'm in touch with my masculine side too. ;)
