Folks, anybody know what condition the Sustrans route is along Loch Lochy between Laggan and Bunarkaig, is this a surfaced path suitable for tourers or a muddy track for knobbly tyres only.

I want to take loaded tourers along there, the route offers a nice alternative to the A82 but the surface may be problem, thoughts form those with experience of this route are welcome.

Please, replies from only those who KNOW what this route surface is like - thank you.

Hi Gary, I did this about 4 years ago in the summer in the dry on a loaded touring bike (cannondale T2000) .I think my tyres were marathon plus 32 front, 35 rear and I cycled all of it.Most of it is classic Highland forestry track, rough, undulating and designed for BIG lorries to take timber out.The track would be harder in the wet and if there were timber extractions going on.It is remote and I only saw one other person . Great scenery ,birds etc If you`re heading that way I would say it`s the only way to go as the A82 is well dangerous. All the best Davy.

You won't have a problem with 32mm tyres. Even on a damp day. There is a photo of the forestry track surface and a desc of Fort Wm to Inverness via the west side of Loch Lochy and the east side of Loch Ness at

Thank you chaps, the route looks passable. I have ridden the A82 in the past, in 2005 with a group of 14 and honestly did not find it that bad at the time. This does offer a nice alternative though.
