Shimano 105

Post by barbelfisher »

Hi all, looking for advice about derailluer sets, just bought a new 105 set (9 speed) to use hopefully with a 7 speed cassette, sorted out the BB, so do I need specific front and back mechs or can I use other Shimano models please?

Kind regards

John.

OK. you want to use a 7 speed cassette, so thats not 105, you're asking about F &R mechs, so what exactly have you bought that is 105? Maybe a chainset?

I use 7-speed cassettes on three bikes with modern MTB and road componentry. You shouldn't have any bother.

current mechs are agnostic to the reduced number of speeds they are to be used with. They are, after all, just 'dumb' spring loaded hinges with some jockey wheels bolted on.

Whilst issues of chain capacity a may rise which need careful consideration especially if mixing across road and mtb components or double and triple chainsets, bottom line is it is the shifters that matter when it comes to mechs working properly with reduced number of speeds/rings or across the road /mtb divide.

ymmv.

Other than Dura Ace,all Shimano rear mechs work with Shimano 5,6,7,8,9,10 cassettes if used with the corresponding shifters,Front road mechs only work with road shifters,MTB F/mechs only work with MTB shifter,Any F/mechs work with friction shifters.
Hope this is of help.
