re my previous comment about these frankly rediculous painted lines on the road, i intend to try and arrange a meeting with someone in charge of cycling in bucks to highblighbt the diffuculty faced by cyclists and the dangers these 'safe cyle routes' pose.
i would be greatful if any advise or anacdotes could be posted to, hopefully, help with my campaign.
When i received initial motorcycle training from the Police, they went to great lengths to point out where you should be on the road and why it was stupid (they used the word suicidal) to ride over to the left.
When on my cycle I am often on the same road and same speed (30mph) as I would be on my motorcycle, so I take the same road position, it being even more important on the cycle as it has a greater stopping distance and is harder to see. Of course i get a lot of abuse off speeding motorists and I was even signalled to move over by a Police motorcyclist who overtook me. He then didnt stop when I signalled to him to stop and come back and I kept in the same position.
The highway code says to keep to the left, which is open to many different interpretations. I do tend to go nearer to the gutter when I am going more slowly. I am not saying that slow cyclists do not have a right to ride away from the kerb but I feel much more happy about challenging a Police officer on the issue if I am doing the sort of speed where a motorcyclist would be criticised for being too close to the gutter. If I was riding my motorcycle at 10mph and not behind other vehicles, I would move further to the left.
Never in the gutter unless I am coming to a stop. My attitude would be different if I was in a city and in the habit of going down the inside of car queues
