roadcombing

Post by ANTONISH »

A bit like beachcombing.
I'm one of the "that may come in useful" generation.
Over the years I have "rescued" a number of useful items. The type of item seems to change annually. One year I was picking up spanners, then it was tape measures, this year I be mainly picking up scissors. As I'm a slow audax rider I often sweep up dropped Brevet cards (one fast rider to her chagrin being credited with my time).
Do others engage in this sort of activity?

Yes.
Over the years: an array of tools (including a beautiful adjustable wrench which is the pride of my toolkit), nuts, bolts, washers, spare hub caps for my car, lengths of timber (bungeed along crossbar sticking out the back as far as you dare  ),folding tyres (many racers carry them in rear pockets or behind saddle, both positions seem a bit insecure),coins (but with inflation I only stop for silver, never copper), a very upmarket yachting jacket. I don't stop to pick up solitary shoes :?

I found an empty wallet once, I say empty, but there was slip of paper with an address.

I posted it off with an explanation of where and when I found it, and got a lovely letter in return. It seems a young lady had it stolen whilst in town and it had obviously been chucked out of a car considering where I found it. She was grateful for my consideration.

The name gives it away really.

Road combing can be just as good.
Set of allen keys, imperial sizes. grrr
Roll of rubber matting. Loads of uses, including covering the surface of my work bench.
Various spanners, screwdrivers.

My brother brought home a pvc trailer cover from the road side recently.

Some years ago a local motorist found a brand new washing machine and a tumble dryer still in their packing at the side of the motorway. I guess it was unloaded from a broken down lorry and accidentally left on the verge.

I left a good pair of cycling specs on a bench on the way to York. Didn't realize until I was 15 miles down the road.

Was that the same one that I passed? I didn't pick it up either!

I only seem to pick up thorns (and not the SJS variety).
I have one in my back tire from last Thursday. :(

I know a chap who would have had that Hare in is saddlebag before it was cold,I've very often seen the tailfeather of a Pheasant poking out of his bag,but as I'm a veggie I sometimes feel cheated :? .

I have over the years picked up spanners, various bits of car trim to use for mudflaps, the biggest Stanley screwdriver I've ever seen,a rear LED light(still in use) a Buff (wore it today, washed first of course),a rather nice teacosy which I tried on for a Buff but it was too small :?

A few months ago hanging from a bush( it was more encompassing the bush TBH) a nice frilly green Bra (looked new),judging by the size DDDD(?)the owner could not have mislaid it as she really needed the supportit offered,(she wouldn't have had a wrinkle in her face when she took it off).
I was about to photograph it( the Bra, not its owner, that wouldn't be correct) when I suddenly realised that to do so would be regarded as weird, so resisted  .

I lost an olive green Buff, you didn't find a Rapha cap, and a pair of arm warmers too did you? Also has any one seen my black Berghaus fleece? can't find it anywhere.

I've picked up an innertube, screwdriver, headtorch, fertilizer bags and earmarked numerous bits of wood which I have picked up later in my vehicle. I have noticed odd shoes and discarded underclothing in hedges.
