Understanding the difference might mean it's easier to achieve what you want.
I agree with the recommendations: eTrex Legend HCx or Vista HCx. They do have a 500 trackpoint limit for a saved track but that is usually enough for a day's cycling. You can also store several tracks and move from one to the next. There are several ways to 'navigate' (using the term loosely) - following trackpoints is not the only one.
