so as not to waste money on fuel or postage i cycled the 76 mile round trip to fetch it on a sunny saturday, the vendors being a lovely couple as well...so it was meant to be...:-)

That is an exact description of the Argos cape I tried, including the Raleigh tag, new for less than £10.....

yeah has reflective strip also....mine is a large though...seemed ok on a test go but not used it proper yet....

could take it back to my laboratory to improve matters of course...

tent seam sealant as you mentioned and possibly some eyelets put in as found on groundsheets etc with a bit of elasticated cord to keep the back end tied down if need be?

i am a cape virgin so lookin foward to what i find out...wont use it til i get my guards tho..dont wanna get wet from underneath my dry cocoon... :D

yeah your terminology in the cape blowin ditty made me think you drove with eyes peelered...lol

I picked up a Carradice Pro Route Cape (the flouro yellow one) from eBay a couple of months ago for about £17 IIRC. Today was the first day since buying it that it was raining heavily, so I wore it for my commute. Having read many negative reports here and elsehwhere, I was a little apprehensive, but I was actually pleasantly suprised. Although it was fairly windy, with the waist tie and wrist strap, I never felt the thing was really flapping or billowing. I did feel noticeably slower when going straight into the wind, but nothing I'd lose any sleep over.

The only downside I noticed was that I got a bit tangled in the wrist strap a couple of times when trying to change gear (downtube shifters). Wouldn't be a problem with STI's or bar ends though. And wearing it also precludes the use of a handlebar mounted computer, GPS or map. I was definitely drier than in my 'breathable' waterproof jacket however.
