Uses for handle bar ends

Following on from a thread about bar end mirrors I am just wondering if bar ends could be useful places for other equipment (or whatever). Any ideas on anything tried in the past or might be a good idea for the future?

I know it's not unusual to have bar end gear
levers, but my bar end grip shifters seem to cause consternation, disdain and puzzlement in all who see them!

Many years ago the Police in this area recovered a bike frame which had been filled with heroin - I suppose the bar ends could be used for the same purpose (storage I mean, not smuggling) . Would it be possible to develop a battery pack which fitted into bar ends and powered lights.

There is already a useful product on the market.
Bought this a couple of months ago for my hybrid - very usefaul when I came off on the ice and had to do some running repairs
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Token ... 360047950/cleverly disguised too so that unless you have them, you would just think they are normal bar ends. many useful tools, with quite good leverage incorporated and it does not rattle

If I have a bike I know I'm going to have long term, I always put a fiver in the handlebars. It's enough to get you out of trouble.

A James Bond type hidden rifle barrel? Firing old bearings at motorists who pass too closely

Wouldn't work with drops though as you would loose your legs

I really like that mod, I'm not a fan of twist grip shifters but that's a cheap way to achieve it, there are always hundreds of semi derelict kids bikes with those lying around, there's one in my basement. It will even work with an MTB front mech and triple ring.

When bike lights had bulbs, it was where I kept spares.

What's causing the above feelings for me is the poorly wrapped handlebar tape and non-aero levers used with interrupters....bravo!.

On my bikes with straights and bar-ends, I often hang my baseball cap on the bar-end when the noddle gets too hot.
I suppose somebody could fashion a short sword/stilletto a bit like the one Steed had in the Avengers hidden in his brolly'. That might quieten rowdy motorists when they start giving abuse.

Anti-car weapons for those approaching too close?
Or you could stuff the handlebars with grass that you can then use to stuff the tyre with if you p*nct*r* in an urban environment.
Storage for your last Rolo, but only in winter.
Zip ties for bits that drop off but that need reattaching.
But....not all at the same time.

Pinched my post, and the rear bulb was kept in the right handlebar, so you find the correct bulb in the dark
Followed a cyclist the other day and the reflector type bar ends really showed up, I think he just had different coloured ones but it generated the thought that you could have a led in the bar end. Would only work for drops though.

I like the ideas for zipties and money, good ideas IMO,I've thought of putting a few spokes in the ends,I realise they will bend in drops which isn't the end of the world, but atleast they wouldn't rattle

.
The twist grip shifters are a good idea too but I'd want to have them the other way around so the alloy/plastic(?) indicator bit is at the end of the bar,if that makes sense.
