In which case helpless lorry drivers really have no alternative but to run you down. I mean imagine taking into account the fact that bikes don't go in a straight line!

Rules 213 and 163 specifically deal with this, and there is even a picture with rule 163 which illustrates what giving as much room as you would a car actually is.
Having recently been on a minor country road with double white lines that was flooded, and signed as being flooded, I signalled and moved carefully to the crown of the road. The water was shallower there. I was more than a little peeved when an idiot in a car tried to overtake me. I was not going too slowly anyway, but their lack of awareness was stunning. Also the lack of consideration, with their assumption that I wanted a good shower. In that case I just smacked the bonnet until she backed off (easy to do as she came so bl**dy close, but as other posters have stated, why on earth did she think that I moved out? She couldn't even overtake at any speed because her wheels were pumping too much water

As Stoobs says, and its the heart of the matter, why aren't these drivers thinking? I firmly believe that its down to beligerence, brought about by an attitude of "its only a bike"confirmed by bad journalism about cyclists in the capital, lack of any real punishment and rehabilitation for drivers who break the law, including killing with a 1 ton weapon, and finally the old chesnut "they don't pay road tax anyway".
In a word the problem is one of prejudice.
I have a friend who's black, and was brought up in the village where we both live, there were no black people in our village during the time of his upbringing, some of the stories he tells me would be laughable if they didn't have such serious undertones,we've talked about cycling and the similarities of prejudice, which is totally unreasonable by unthinking people, who then go home and have a family meal, watch TV together and think no more about their dispicable behaviour.
