I believe that Ellis Briggs resprays are actually out-sourced to Bob Jackson. I cannot confirm this, it is based on what I remember having read and therefore may bot be true.

If this is true then why are Ellis B's prices less than Bob J's? (as are their prices for brazes etc)

If they are Jackson resprays then I have two done by them and a third currently with them: one was excellent, one was good but I'd put that down to the poor state of the metal (pitted corrosion) over which they were working.

Hope that this helps.

I had a Galaxy frame resprayed via Ellis Briggs about three years ago and they definately outsourced the work to Bob Jackson at that time.

In fact when I was in the shop they were removing all the spraying apparatus.

The work done by Jacksons was very good, took about six weeks though.

I am sure a phone call/e-mail to Ellis Briggs will answer your question.

If you e-mail a chap called Paul ( paul@ellisbriggs.co.uk ) he answers e-mails pretty quickly.

I suppose we are spoilt for choice round here. It's a while since I had a respray at EB but it was excellent. It's still the same firm (even if we've all grown older :( ) so I'm sure it will be just as good.

If you want something artistic, Chris Marshall at Keighley is a whizz with the spray.

How times change. I remember getting a frame or two sprayed through Macklams, and he outsourced it to Ellis Briggs...

I recall seeing an Ellis Briggs at York Rally in the early 80s and the finish and paint job was as good as anything I've seen, absolutely superlative stuff. Whether that was still in house or farmed out I wouldn't know.

It is also my understanding the Bob Jackson do the re-spraying for Ellis Briggs, and yes, it is odd that Ellis Briggs' prices are lower than Bob Jackson's themselves - or were the last time I priced them up.

I had an Ellis Briggs frame built in 1983, and the paint job was still excellent when I terminally pranged the frame in 2006. From what I've heard, Ellis Briggs no longer make their own frames. A lot of local riders (local to me, that is) are very supportive of Bob Jackson, and always give very good reports - I've never had a Bob Jackson myself, but see below.

When replacing my Ellis Briggs, I felt that my custom wasn't valued at Ellis Briggs and I looked at Bob Jacksons. I also looked at Mercian, and whilst Bob Jackson were very helpful and attentive - and their frames certainly looked good - a simple thing like the lug lining made my decision to go to Mercian - I thought the BJ lug lining was too heavy - crude almost.

I've had a couple of resprays done by Chris Marshall, and in my opinion, they are the best paint jobs that I've ever seen. Chris is in Keighley, 01535 691073). Price depends upon what you want, so you'd have to talk to him. Chris's resprays are an absolute restoration masterpiece - he's an artist - and very popular among the local "bygone bikes" fraternity. Chris Marshall is also a very experienced and well regarded framebuilder.

Just to clear up any confusion, I can assure you Ellis Briggs frames are definitely made at the shop on Otley Road as they always have been since 1965 in the current shop and 1936 when they were previously across the road. The current framebuilder has worked for them since 1975. Enamelling is now outsourced to Bob Jackson. They were forced to move the enamelling out of the shop in the early 90's due to health and safety reasons. A lot of the industrial work that they relied on dried up and they had to close it in 1996. Since then they've used Jacksons.

I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experiance John W.

Ah - I'm glad to hear that Paul I really don't like to hear of the loss of any local framebuilder - Can I quote you when the teashop discussion goes along those lines? Thanks for putting me right.

At one time, Ellis Briggs did the enamelling for at least one other framebuilder - or so I understood at the time.
