Is there room for a national non-competitive cycling member's club?
I think there is room for such a club. For maximum confusion (or clarity depending on your POV), we could call it Cyclists' Touring Club, a name recently vacated by CTC, therefore presumably available for reuse

Luckily/unfortunately (depending on your point of view) the Cyclists' Touring Club is a name enshrined in law and so hasn't become 'vacant', despite CTC's best efforts to rid itself of any connection with its past.

What a pity you can't use the name that best describes the new club even though it's not wanted by the CTC.

I was hoping for a situation where CTC would have the embarrassment of explaining that they're not the Cyclists' Touring Club. How about Cycle Touring Club? This is nearly as good, abbreviates to CTC (necessary for maximum embarrassment) and hopefully isn't enshrined in law. Otherwise we'll have to settle for Robgul's idea, though this name doesn't abbreviate to CTC, so will be a lot less fun

. Never mind

(Please note emoticons - I am not 100% serious!)

Cycle Touring Club ... has a nice ring to it - £7 seemed a worthwhile .org.uk investment for this ...

i think it would have to go into liquidation before the name is "vacated". Also any name request which is very similar to other registered companies may be rejected.

The AA and RAC are evidently different enough names, so how about "The Royal Cycle Tourists' Association"?
Of course we'd need the patronage of a member of the Royal Family - how difficult could that be to arrange?

The CTC has had/does have royal patronage.
From the Club histoy: "1936 King George VI became Patron following the death of George V and abdication of Edward VIII".
Edit: In fact the current Queen is patron now: "1952 Death of King George VI. HM Queen Elizabeth II became Patron".
The history has not been updated since 1980.

Ah! indeed Karen (I rather thought that HM was the current Patron - must have read it somewhere - sometime), but (it seems to me) any thing that occurred/was available etc to members more than ooh! say ... 5 years ago is regarded (in some areas of 'management) as 'baggage' and best ignored (badges?

). Charity hmpf! ... Begins at home.

Speaking of badges. I recently spoke to the CTC chap in charge of marketing (Edit: Marketing Manager) to ask about the position regarding members having new Winged Wheel badges made, as the CTC are no longer doing them. I'm waiting for him to come back to me regarding regulations on copyright. I would have thought the members owned the copyright but it's not my field of expertise. I think I'll try contacting him today.

Hm! If members
do hold copyright re the badges, perhaps I don't need to lose any sleep over this sort of thing

(not that I do anyway

Well they've lost motion 10, so we should get another pot at it. My subs don't run out until 2013 so there's time to vote against some re-elections before I withhold the next instalment.
