Re: What kick stand to use for fully loaded??
+ 1 for sbseven's remark - can't trust a prop-stand to do it's job for a fully loaded bike, weighing upwards of 50lbs, so don't bother to cart the extra, superfluous, weight around with me. I use a 'parking brake' instead...
'Parking brake' is small length of webbing, with Fastex-type buckle, doesn't weigh anything, stays wrapped round steerer when not in use, & is entirely effective in doing its job of stopping the bike moving, once it's propped against any convenient vertical surface, usually the wall nearest whatever establishment I am downing coffee and cake in!

Me too. Lean it on the nearest wall. Kick stands just damage the tubing.
If at first you don't succeed - cheat!!
Re: What kick stand to use for fully loaded??
Hi, I use a click-stand which is fitted under the crossbar and easily fitted and packed, my bike manufacturer didn't recommend the usual type stands because of the loading on the frame especially with a heavily laden bike.
You can google "click-stand" or contact the supplier at info@click-stand.com. To prevent the bike moving whilst on the stand I apply both brakes using shortened leather straps from toe clips, this really steadies the bike on the stand. I leave the leather straps dangling on the end of my bars for convenience, its no problem

No problems with the kickstand supplied on my Koga World Traveller. The stand is fited as standard and actually bolts on to a specially designed part of the frame. The lean angle is not so big so it is helped by having a bit of weight to stop it from falling over. When unladen it could probably do with more of a lean angle, but fully laden it works perfectly well.

I remembered seeing this thread and saw an angling stand in the pound shop today. Didn't really want one but couldn't resist it for £1!
Exactly like yours only the end on mine is flourescent green.

Not much of an option if you tour in places like Iceland, not many walls, fences or trees there come to that.
Wouldn't be without a kickstand, so easy to kick it down quickly to support the bike when you want to take a quick break, photo etc. Been through plenty different makes and types, with some being absolute rubbish and not lasting one lean!
The best one we have used so far that works well with a loaded touring bike is the Pletscher Multizoom Rear Mount Kickstand definitely worth the 340g of extra weight!

Re: What kick stand to use for fully loaded??
I did a 3 day tour recently and most of the time there was somewhere to lean the bike but on the couple of times there wasn't I didn't like laying it down although it didn't seem to come to any harm.
The traditional kickstand is obviously very quick and convenient. The clikstand types look to be less so as you need to unfold or extend them and fix the brakes and then reverse it when you leave.
I may try the fishing rest if I see one cheap.
Al, On the photo of yours fixed to the bike would it fit the other way so the rest is against the bottom of the seat tube and the point upwards. Although writing that I don't know whether that would be very safe
Also do you find it works best propping up the head tube rather than the seat tube in the middle of the bike?
thanks

FREEBOOTER - I have been playing around with a few ideas - and the seat tube is a better spot to use.
Well - on my bike anyway

Thank you! I have been looking for a quality stand for a couple of months.

Re: What kick stand to use for fully loaded??
Re the brake 'parker '- I use a couple of thick rubber bands - that must weigh even less than 'nothing'
And cut a branch from a tree to make a prop for my bike - with a 'v' at one end to stick under the seat tube.
I took these on a recent short tour of the Highlands, leaving by bike prop at home.
I am sure I saved 8 oz at least.

Its a rod rest, or bank stick, with a plastic V at the top. Its in two parts, an aluminium rod holding the plastic V that slides into an aluminium tube with an adjustable clamp screw so you can set it to just the height you want. A couple of strong elastic bands are required to hold on the brakes and you are in business.
It stows quite neatly nesting next to my pump with the V nesting in the V on the headstock on my particular bike.
Cost not $28 + postage from USA, but £3.95! Its a Dinsmore Arrow Point bank stick in case any one fancies one (I did cut a bit off both the tube and the rod to make it fit my bike perfectly. I also wound a piece of duct tape around the end of the rod that is inside the tube to cut out annoying rattles)
Very effective bike stand, my thanks to Shaun and Click Stand
Al
Hi Al,
I really like your idea, but my local angling shop doesn't sell them. I'm trying to get one online, but they seem to come in different lengths, so I need to know the length of yours please? And did it come with a V shaped head?

I use one of these on the `Beast`-
http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/pletscher-es ... -prod1513/
Brilliant.
Had it for years, really clever device.
Used it on a tandem at one time.
Edit-
Just seen this-
"Maximum load including bicycle 18kg"
The `Beast` on its own weighs that much!

This maybe a silly question but.....What kind of kick stands do people tend to use for fully loaded Touring Bikes.
I have a Hebie Bipod Stand 605 NL and a retro fit stand plate 699 40 which I fitted to my Surly Long Haul Trucker back in early 2010. I have been using it since then and found it quite handy. For sure sometimes a little effort is need to park the bike so it does not fall over but for me that is a small trade off for the connivence and weight of the stand.
I find it makes loading up easier and unpacking as well. Also when bushcamping I tend to leave my panniers on the bike so again access is simple. Also handy for maintenance when out on a tour.
So for me it works well.
I also tried a Greenfield Stabilizer rear mount kickstand which I mounted to my BOB Ibex trailer (now sold) with the idea of using it combination with my Giant XTC 2 bikepacking setup. In this configuration it really didn't work. I suspect in part because the front end of the bike was too light.
Now that I have gone to using a Extrawheel Voyager as part of my bikepacking setup I need to re-investigate my options re a stand.
