Specialized Sirrus for touring?

Post by Slowroad »

I've been looking for a new or 'new' touring bike for a while and have been offered a secondhand Specialized Sirrus. I'm likely to do maybe one two-week camping trip a year, plus hostelling weekends, so no major expeditions. I've realised that although it's lovely to have a bike which one could take off to Patagonia at a moment's notice, in reality I don't actually need a 'proper' tourer. But is this bike up to the job? Any comments gratefully received!

If you can fit a rack to it then buy it.

It's up to the job.

My girlfriend bought a 2nd hand Sirrus 2009 and we have used it on many short trips and has been great! With a blackburn rear rack fitted it carries a lot of weight with no problem (tent etc) including camping in new forest with on and off road riding. Its a nice bike for the price. Good luck!

This is not only a comment on the suitability of the model of the bike but also a recommendation for the manufacturer

A couple of years ago we were in Holland, my son on his Sirrus. We'd done a lot of miles and towards the end of the trip we noticed a crack in the forks. To cut a long story, the right leg of the fork snapped, the bike was then two year old but Specialised replaced the forks free of charge with my son paying only for postage of the parts to his lbs. My son could not recall anything which may have damaged the forks leading to the break.

Well done Specialised

By the way. the bike was suitable for touring but with panniers on the rear - moderately loaded - the front of the bike was very light and it was easy to lift the front wheel when climbing (obviously the climbing wasn't in Holland). A bar bag would probably be a good thing.
Retired and loving it
