Maybe they didn't see you with their illegal tints.
What I want to know is why the tint companies aren't fined for fitting such illegal tints?

£30 fine each.
They probably will quite literally not even know that they have paid it.

Presumably for the same reason that 4x4 owners aren't fined for fitting iron bars to the front of their vehicles?
Although in fairness, iron bars aren't illegal, tints are. It's OK to reduce the NCAP pedestrian rating for your truck from "poor" to "bloody pathetic" by the addition of a 'leg crunching'/'toddlers head' hitting steel bar.
Re: Been hit by a footballers car?
Well it's not illegal to fit tints if the car isn't to be used on the public highway.
But if a car is going to be used on the road then they shouldn't fit the tints. The presence of a tax disc and numberplate should allow the fitter to determine this.

I am very surprised the football lobby have not been out claiming their precious heroes are being picked on.
The employer sorted it out while the people they own were at work
so that must be alright.
Personally if think the windows should have been broken at the time they were stopped as well as a percentage fine of income.
Shall we start at 10% after all the guilty should pay all the costs of enforcing the laws.
The wife just suggested impounding the car and then it is sold to pay for more police.

tints should be universally banned - they just obstruct the vision of everyone around you...
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

100% with you there. One can only imagine what sort of visibility they get in foggy conditions.
Re: Been hit by a footballers car?
I once bought a used car with heavy tints on the side and rear windows. Twas 'orrible - especially at night when it was very difficult to see what was happening in side roads as I turned into them. The side tints were removed PDQ.
Re: Been hit by a footballers car?
Correct me if I'm wrong (as if I needed to say that) but I think that tinted windows are not illegal per se. There are degrees of tint which are permissible in the rear and side windows but not the windscreen. I don't know how it's done but I'm aware that out local traffic patrol police officers had a device which was able to test the tint and determine if lawful or unlawful
Of course the boy racers, footballers wives and scrap metal dealers DO tend to ignore the regulations so they need to be dealt with appropriately.

It used to be just the windscreen, but recently it changed to the front side windows. The rear sides and rear can still have obscene tints.

Yeah, some of those vans have metal where they should have windows! How crazy is that...

Read the article : "By law, front driver and passenger windows must allow 70% of light through and the windscreen 75%"

Re: Been hit by a footballers car?
I'm suprised that blacked out front windows don't fail an MOT test. I assume that they dont because vehicles seem to get through the test with them.
I've had a vehicles with them pull out on me a few times as if they hadn't seen me (although I'm not sure if its more than average) but at least it should make my claim easier if it caused a collision.

I'd be surprised if any footballer playing for a Premier League club had a car old enough to NEED a MOT....

Re: Been hit by a footballers car?
Unfortunately, I've never been able to find a link to the Con and Use regs so I'm depending on my memory, which may be unreliable and or / out of date.
For many years, the Police Federation (the staff association for constable to chief inspector ranks) has been concerned about the dangers to its members posed by tinted glass (not being able to see the occupants of a vehicle, rather than any road safety aspect.) One Con and Use reg bans windows being obscured ie darkened. Since the word has come to mean 'blocked' in everyday speech, some have taken it to mean too many nodding dogs on the parcel shelf.
There's nothing particularly new in the legislation, although enforcement was streamlined when it became a fixed penalty offence. There is now equipment to measure the amount of light passing through a window. There's also nothing new in the GMP taking action over this, nor in their using a few high profile scalps to achieve maximum publicity.
