The Rich List
The Rich List
I've just been looking at the top ten richest people in the UK according to The Sunday Times Rich List. How the other half live eh? Wonder if they have any recollection of what it's like to live like ordinary folk - although some never have done it given that their mouths are so full of silver spoons they can hardly talk proper. Bet they never fix their own punctures or take a suite at a YH
On a slightly serious note, the tendency amongst the richest to give more and more of their wealth to charitable foundations (e.g. Bill Gates) is to be applauded.
I'm coming to the conclusion that I will never be on any rich list, but you know what, I'm happy with my lot and that is worth a fortune to me

I'm right with you there

Never a truer word said.
I wonder just how happy they are. I have learnt in the last 18 months, to be happy with what life has dealt you is one thing. So I now consider myself a lot more fortunate than others even the rich.
How about a nice bike ride just to get even more contented.

Good for you - the rest of us didn't say we weren't rich - simply that we weren't rich enough to be on the list!

Re: The Rich List
My wife was keen to see the Rich List today (I don't know if she's finally decided to look for somebody to keep her in the manner....
) Anyway, I shelled out for a Sunday Times. Now, if anybody had told me, say 50 years ago, that my pension would be enough to be spending 40/- on Sunday papers (actually, the total spend was £3/18s/-d
because she reads the Sunday Telegraph as well) then I'd have assumed that I would be very rich in my old age. And in many ways, I suppose I am.
Re: The Rich List
Somebody did some research on the subject ( I dont know how you measure happiness but they thought you could) and it appears that happiness levels out at quite a moderate level of financial well being.
Possibly less than the start of the higher tax band.
Who would want to be super rich? You would never be able to trust anyone, EVER.
All decent people would avoid you and the slimeballs would be sucking up to you all the time. YUK.

Perhaps all your socialising would be on forums where armed with a silly name you could hide behind your anonymity...

I think the best yardstick of wealth or material riches is to compare yourself with most people in the world rather than with a few who are exceptionally rich. Anyone who has access to clean water, a roof over their head, 3 meals a day and access to basic health care and education is, in world terms, inordinantly rich.
I never read articles like the Rich List. IMHO they appeal to base instincts like nosiness, jealousy and mock moral outrage. A bit like reading about an establisment figure's titillitating sexual indescretions whilst adopting the mantle of moral outrage.
The papers certainly know their readers!

Don't know what your definition of a decent person is but mine wouldn't include someone who avoids people because of their wealth or, for that matter, their poverty.

Personally, I couldn't care less what people earn. So long as I can pay the bills there are much more important things to think about than zeros on a bank statement. File it alongside other people's sexuality and belief systems as 'none of my business'.

Wheras what my friends think and do is my business.
When other peoples concerns are non of my business I am avoiding them.
If you go out with a friend and you want to stop for a break, there is a hotel which is way above your price range. Your rich friend says "Oh, its OK I'll pay, I am dying for a drink." This sort of thing becomes regular and normal. In the end you are accepting a life of luxurious treats which you can not afford.
Not a position that I would want to end up in, so I just would not go anywhere with that person to begin with.

Not sure I'd have much in common with anyone who habitually went to expensive restaurants simply because they are expensive, or was insensitive enough not to know not everyone could afford the tab. I'd say he was welcome to pay if we could all go to the local Greasy Spoon.
In my experience people driven by wealth are actually motivated by the power wealth brings and the control it allows over other people. Having no wish to control or be controlled, money is something best not talked about in case it evokes envy or pity, as are situations where money's an issue.
