Well, you don't need to go through the Ped Tunnel, i'm hoping that's what your on about since the Tyne Tunnel would just be too dangerous and would kill you with the fumes.
I've cycled to Kirkby Stephen from South Shields before, this would be my route - but i've planned it from Whitley Bay to Kendal.
I've been to Kendal as well, you can avoid all the major roads too, nice country lanes/roads.
I'm hoping you can see this route i've made:

Brilliant, many thanks. I've been looking at the maps but somtimes you cant see the wood for the trees, nice to have a bit of local knowledge, Cheers.
I've just booked my B&B in Whitely Bay at OakTree Lodge, I'll be coming over from Workington / Maryport on the Sunday.
Thanks again

How about following the Reivers Route via Keilder?

Looks nice but a bit too far north for C2C in one day!

I would also use the BRT route posted by Matty it's a good and takes you past many of the urban Tyneside sights (Segedunum Roman Fort, Millenium Bridge, Sage Gateshead, Newcastle Quayside). Definitely stay on the north side of the River Tyne before crossing at the Scotswood Bridge. South side is a poor cycle route with much twisting and turning through post industrial scenery. The profile is fairly flat in the early to middle stage but necessarily gets hillier later - especially the climb out of Stanhope onto Bollihope Common - drove up there the other day and it refreshed my memory of the times I've cycled it in the past - stiff!
Refreshments on the route - as you cycle along Newcastle Quayside there are several cafes and sandwich shops. Just before you cross the Tyne on the Scotswood Bridge you have the option to slightly detour along the north side of the river for 500 yards where opposite the big B and Q you'll see a roadside sandwich caravan actually at the side of the cycle path - spotlessly clean and highly recommended - if you visit this then retrace your steps and cross the bridge; nothing much after that until you get to the outskirts of Consett where you'll see McDonalds and Morrissons Supermarket (lot's more in the town including a good Wetherspoons and a cafe on the main street called Maddisons where the owner/chef claims to have 127 recipes for scones!). Leaving Consett along the Waskerly Way cycle path after 5 miles or so you'll come to a popular cyclists cafe at Parkhead. This is not long before the great descent into Stanhope (good brakes needed) where there are lots of choices. After leaving Stanhope I don't think there's anything until Middleton in Teesdale where there are several cafes and a good 'chippie'
The navigation is simple as you can follow the C2C until Stanhope. It's well signposted and the majority on cycle paths
Hope this helps

Thanks for the info, I think I'll be following Mattys route, and thanks for the info re food
I'll print it off and check it out on Google earth. I've still got to get out and get some miles in but at the moment work is holding me back, had a run out up into the peak district last week Macc, Cat and Fiddle, Buxton, then had to use the A6 as Long hill was closed 48.8miles in 3h 34min and full of a cold. Sarah our youngest gave me a right telling off when I got home.
Looking forward to meeting up with Mick on the 22nd
and then later I've got a few days off before I do the C2C. Then after that I've got the Manchester to Blackpool, I'm going to try and do it both ways it should work out at about 135miles, that will be a personal best as my max before is 127. One thing about all the extra work is I've had a lot of early starts up at 4.00 am so I've got an early start on the Man - Blackpool 0630 that should give me plenty of time.
Cheers
