mountain bike wheels for road

a mate of mine has got just one bike - an expensive fully tricked-up mountain bike. However, his MTB wheels and tyres are heavy and slow if we go for a road run. Are MTB (26 inch) wheels/tyres/tubes available for road use only. I'm talking rim/tyre sections comparable to 700c road racing, ie 23mm, not the usual 1.3 inch etc?

if he's got disc brakes then he could have some 700c rims mounted in MTB disc hubs. Will cut down on the clearance if mudguards are required but will allow the use of light race tyres.

if rim brakes then just go for some good quality light XC wheels and you'll have to put up with the choice of MTB slick availible. The choice is OK if you are looking for a commuting/touring tyre but they are not up to the same standard, speed wise, as the better 700c race tyres.

You can get Conti Grand Prix in 25 section (559-25) or Conti Gatorskin in 28, but probably the limiting factor will be rim width. If you go too narrow on a wide rim, the tyre section starts to become D-shaped rather than round, and you get a harsh ride.
Looking at the Mavic website, they quote maximum pressures for the XC717 rim down to 25mm (113psi)

Provided the rims are narrow enough there are a variety of 1" wide tyres available often slick high pressure types. Wider 1.25-1.35" are also a good bet, Specialized Fat Boy 1.25" wide slick tyres with Kevlar puncture proof layer are particularly good with a high psi rating as are Panaracer or Schwalbe models.

You can really shift on these tyres but you soon start to think about raising your gearing and then your on the slippery slope to a new dedicated road bike !

Have fun.........Velomaniac
