Shimano Trigger shifter

Post by cricklewood_graeme »

I recently saw a 7 speed trigger shifter on a bike which caught my attention as I need to replace my 15 yr old trigger which is falling apart. It looked like the 8 speed one which you can view at http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Shima ... 360014575/

I believe the Shimano 7 speed version code is ST 7S20 but I can't find it anywhere on the net. Does anyone know whether it is still available?

The part you are looking for I believe is this one http://www.madison.co.uk/productinfo.as ... f=STT300PA

What purpose do you need the shifter for? Is it specifically for a hub geared bike? Or do you have a derailleur type with cantilever or v-type brakes?

Cantilever/single pivot/dual pivot compatible integrated levers are very hard to find these days. V-Brake types with integrated shifter are very easy to find second hand but here's a new examplehttp://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Shimano-EZ ... 5ad99f3aa3 & http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SHIMANO-RAPID-FIR ... 335d20f7c8

You could also buy a 7 speed shifter pod on its own for very little money(£9 posted) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Shimano-Thumb-Shi ... 439f94b198

Thanks for your comprehensive reply Tony. My LBS informs me that the shifter I was looking at was phased out some time ago due to problems with it. I am not sure about that as I see the 8 gear version which looks identical, still being marketed by Wiggle. The Nexave system you pointed me to looks more robust than the ST 7S20. My setup is cantilevered brakes and 7 speed derailleur and I gather that limits me. Yes I could just buy separate shifters but my brake levers are knackered as well hence the idea of buying neatness with a combi system.

Be careful though... I'm pretty sure the Nexave lever Tony points to is designed for use with "low-normal" rear derailleurs. That means that the spring on the rear derailleur pulls it inwards (towards the biggest ring/lowest gear) rather than (as with most rear mechs) outwards. Unless your current rear mech is low-normal (and I doubt it is if it's 15 years old) then you'll need to budget for a new Nexave rear mech to match the levers.

And even then, the Nexave lever is designed for V-brakes, not cantilevers. It might do the job (opinions vary) but you might find yourself needing to upgrade the brakes as well!

Incidentally, the Nexus 8-speed lever you pointed to is designed for use with hub gears - it won't work with a derailleur anyway.

Graeme I found the Nexave cheaper here http://www.petracycles.co.uk/stt300-nex ... 12646.html

No that's not correct, Shimano specifically state that this is for cantilever AND V-brake, you just change the position of the brake cable puller see tech docs http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/techd ... 605559.PDF

Even better, apparently the modified ST-EF50 has both the v-brake & cantilever position. These aren't readily available in the UK but I found a right 7 speed one for £20 posted from france http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Manette-levier-fr ... 255a758d70

I stand corrected. I was looking at the tech sheets for the lever itself - they don't mention any adjustment device.
