I wasn't.
I was taking a contrary argument that it was an almost impossibly hard task and that shorter isn't always "shorter".

By definition, the shortest route would be off-road!

It shouldnt be difficult to navigate at all if following a track on a GPS.
The 10,000 trackpoints will cover that distance even on an intricate route.

Confirmed - It works a treat I've just done 150 miles in two days this way over the weekend, plotted route over shortest straight line (this time to the east coast) didn't get lost once, averaged 14.2 mph. Suspect my Garmin Edge may not have enough memory for the whole LEJOG so that may be a real problem.

I did the whole JOGLE using .tcx courses, and had them loaded on my MicroSD card in my Edge 705, but had my laptop as well so I could upload the recordings each evening.

I agree with Mick F about the A30. Recently did JOGLE in 8 days and I didn't find traffic a problem. Also did same route as he describes except took A34 through Stoke etc and A449 (Kidderminster). In fact my chosen route was the Cracknell/Romero record attempt on tandem route at 860 ish.

Well I did it! 10 days, the history on my Garmin shows I covered ~850 miles, I've got to take a good look at the GPS tracks before I confirm my actual distance, compared to the planned route. It wasn't possible to take all planned shortcuts due to weather in Scotland.

The route was an interesting mix of main trunk roads and some intricate and interesting & hilly riding through North East Devon, Quantocks, the North west, South of Edinburgh, Highlands, and finally the strange last 20 miles I'd plotted over the middle of the peninsular to JOG, where one road did not exist.

Fascinating experience.

In terms of LEJOG ride in general I made something hard, even harder, I've lost 3/4 of a stone, I think carrying camping gear no matter how light, slows you down a fair bit, I say this as I joined a guy Alex for half day and he was carrying nothing, aerobars, support etc, I think we were about the same fitness but he was able to leave me about a mile an hour or so faster as we approached Edinburgh.

Still I should fly around Hertfordshire now with no 7/8 kg panniers on.

I loved the challenge, the planning, execution and everything about it so a question for the forum - what next..?

What are the similar challenge rides maybe somewhere warmer

Well done Paul!

Excellent ride!

Now you've done it the shortest route, why not do it again, but the longest!
