Re: Hull-Manchester

Re: Hull-Manchester
Hi Jean,
I have cycled the Trans-Pennine trail many times between Manchester & Hull, it's a great route with plenty of off road. For more information use the following site : http://www.transpenninetrail.org.uk/
Depending how fit you are it can be done in a day, if not take plenty of breaks, there's lots to see on route and plenty of B&B's.

Re: Hull-Manchester
The bits of the transpennine that I know and ride on or near are very confusing. It constantly changes roads, snakes around the place etc. It seems to fiddly to be worthwhile. The name suggests it is one big trail/road, but it really isn't. There are signs near the trail that just say "transpennine trail -->" and you think "oh so i'm on that trail?" but you aren't, its a sign pointing towards where the trail is, and when you follow the blue sign you don't get to any trail.
This is just the bit through south manchester though.

A brief outline of an expedient route I road from Oldham (not very pleasant at the best of times) is Huddersfield(various routes over the Pennines, generally A62 is the best and easiest) Horbury (breakfast stop) Wakefield, Pontefract Knotting, Rawcliffe. then join the busy A63 dual carriageway, Humber Bridge, Hull, Docks. Best of luck
Re: Hull-Manchester
I thank you all for all this information. I think I'll try the trail.

The only part of the Transpennine Trail that's confusing is the bit around the Woodhead Tunnel between Dunford Bridge and Woodhead in the Longdendale Valley. The trail's designers ran out of ideas since the tunnel now carries the national grid, and opt to send the cyclist over the tops.
It's not a spectacular off-road route and can get quite muddy in wet weather but it is quiet for the most part and of course, flat. For the distance you're looking at I'd get the maps out and choose back lanes, resorting to the TP trail to get round the busy parts.
Re: Hull-Manchester
I have cycled the section of the transpennine trail from Glossop to Hull. There is a fair bit of it on disused railway lines which I found pleasant.
The stretch near Conisbrough was a little rough, and seemed to go the long way round, there are other routes that would be shorter and smoother.
The section on the A628 woodhead pass was busy, I decided to go on the A628 rather than the rough bridal ways sustrans suggests.
I haven't been west of Glossop, so can't comment on that part of the route.
Sustrans do a selection of maps that cover the trail, and the trail is also marked on the OS maps available. I would use the trail as a guide and use the OS maps to fill in the missing bits.

if you mean the old railway line leading to the tunnel, then that's really pleasant, almost flat, fairly smooth and entirely traffic free. OP - what size are your tyres?

The section along side the woodhead reservoir is a nice section of old railway line, the section I was refering to was between the mouth of the tunnel and the Junction of A635 / dunford bridge road. The trail is routed on about 3km of rough bridal way and I found it easier to go on the main road.
I have 622/32 tyre on the back and 622/37 tyre on the front.

I did the Trans Pennine Trail last year on 700/28s - no problem at all!
Re: Hull-Manchester
Hello, by Jove, I have just received the three maps for the transpennine trail and the little booklet that goes with them and some more papers....magnificent, well done. I am looking forward to cycling that way end of July or beginning of August. Thank you all for the information.

Re: Hull-Manchester
whether the surface needs thick tyres or can be done on thin ones, much of it's a pleasure to ride. i wouldn't recommend an evenings entertainment and an overnight stay at the bently hotel though
Re: Hull-Manchester
Hi, I will be in Hull on Wednesday morning with the boat from Zeebrugge (about 8.15) and I shall begin cycling towards Manchester following the TPT...Thanks for all the help.
