The bands were indeed a decal. Apropos of these forks, I remember that my first pair suffered some rather extreme rusting internally and were replaced by Raleigh under warranty, but I expect if it ain't happened by now, you'd probably be OK

Mine was a 54/42 chainset, with 6 rear sprockets. The wheels were 27 by one and a quarter with "high pressure" tires.It was too small for me, yet really comfy, it seemed bespoke rather than having a single groupset

That wasn't original spec was it? original was 52/42 and 5-speed 14-34

no I think my bike had been changed a lot, I found the bike in a 2nd hand shop and brought it very cheaply as a back up should my car fail me, this was during the non cycling part of my cycling life. I had the bike for about 20 years, then I went into a LBS to see if I could fit a modern groupset. The mechanic told me he could bend tubes and weld stuff and indeed do it with enough work, but the cost would have been as high as a new bike so I declined.
