Aero lever cable replacement: any tricks?

Post by SA_SA_SA »

I have just replaced the inner cable in an drop bar aero lever: which was tricky due to the cable passing through stop then to the recessed cable stop: are there any tricks to this?

Perhaps aero levers would be better with a cable clamp?

None really. I've tried feeding the cable through from the back end of the lever, so you can see where the hole is, but I've spent endless hours trying to thread replacement inners through aero, ergo and STI levers.

It's easier if you are re-taping the bars at the same time. You can then remove the outer, thread the cable through the brake, into the open air, then into the outer. Snug everything down - avoiding kinks when you tighten up - then tape the bars.
The chanelling isn't well thought out for cable replacement, only operation.

Old school exposed cables are a doddle by comparison.

In the end I gave up trying to fit the cable with the lever on the bike. It was to frustrating. Now I undo the clamping bolt when hold the lever up so light shines through the small hole at the back and feed the cable through. It is then easy to push the inner down the outer. I then gently pull the inner where it exits at the frame while slowly offering the lever back to the bar clamp.
It does help that when I put the bar tape on I did so with the above in mind.

It takes about 15minutes to unwrap the bar tape to brake lever, take the outer cable out of the lever, thread the inner through, replace the outer holding in place with black tape and then rewrap the bar tape.
I agree the none aero levers were a doddle but who wants them :|
