Altura Dryline bag / map case

Post by matt2matt2002 »

Just fitted my new 7 litre Altura Dryline bar bag and cannot get my head around the map cover on top of the bag
Although the map is well protected with a velcro seal, the whole thing appears to just sit on top of the bag and flap about.
Am I missing something?

Yup.

But then, so is everyone else who's got one of these.. including me, who's tried to work round it by running a bungee from within the closure fold to the tops of me bar ends. With the map inside it, but just left 'as is', it would stay fairly secure as long as there's no wind, no bumps in the road and nothing else to dislodge it. Without a map it'll flap around either in the wind, over bumps, or if there is any forward motion of the bicycle!

I run two sets of handlebars on my tourer (SPA will recognise this description): two stems, one 4" above the other, with drops on the lower set (like a normal road bike) and on the top, stumpy stem, a sawn-off riser bar with bar ends, for a very comfortable upright position for long slow hills so my back doesn't get locked into the same angle for miles. Hence the bar ends on these riser bars are only say 12" apart, and close to the map case anyway.

An easier solution for you though may be a couple of twin strips of stickyback velcro to hold the mapholder down to the barbag lid, though when I tried this on an earlier model, the velcro proved stronger than the glue and the strip came off the lid/mapholder.. just thought though, how about attaching the velcro so the male and female strips don't quite line up above each other? So only a few mm wide strip actually bonds with the other strip.. but the full width of the glue still holds the velcro strip onto bag/mapholder. Also run the strip over the leading/trailing edge of the bag lid, so the end isn't constantly taking all the force when you unvelcro the mapholder from the bag..

Think I'm rambling now. Give me a shout if any of that helps!

Or get one of these cheap Chinese made bags for less money which have a decent waterproof map pocket that attaches with press-studs at the front and velcro at the rear, has good labyrinth sealing and folds over in a couple of different ways so you can see different bits of the map without removing it (sorry no picture of map pocket available). The bag is totally waterproof as well and the quick release attachment works fine, I have only used it a few times but the same make waterproof panniers are lasting OK for commuting duties. I paid £6 plus £3 P+P on Ebay but they have gone up a little bit now on there, £10 with free delivery here:

I use a clothes peg. It does the job very well, but of course shouldn't be required!

My Karimoor bar bag (which is not waterproof) hooks onto a Klickfix handlebar fitting. It does have a map pocket which is too small so I put my map in a self seal food bag which is kept within the bag at the top. The zips are kept partly open for quick access.

But I am interested in the Chinese Bag - does this bar bag fit the bike on a Klickfix or is there some built in fitting thats not shown?

The bag has a quick detach system similar to a Klickfix, but I don't think its the same. It is very easy to use and the handlebar bracket was no problem to attach apart from needing a bit of inner tube between it and the bar to make it fit my bars. The bracket also has a strong adjustable strap that passes under the stem to stop it rotating forwards/down. If you want some pics, bracket, map pocket, etc., let me know but it may take a day or two for me to get round to it.

I tied a bit of string in a loop and sealed it in the velcro enclosure and hooked that under the klickfix bracket when attaching the bag. Sort of worked but it still flapped a fair bit as can be seen here on a windy day by the sea....

I have the Altura Orkney handlebar bag. It has the same loose map that just sits on the top of the bag. Perhaps because the rear of the bag is angled down on my bike I haven’t had a problem with the map case flapping around – although I haven’t been out with it on a really windy day.

It does just feel as though something is missing, doesn’t it? I noticed two small loops on the bag’s top flap, nearest the rider. It almost seems that they are there for a length of cord to pass through and slip over the map case.

Just plain loopy

But apparently not :?

Can we have a pic or two or your bar set up. . What a great idea. I am wondering if I should weld drops bends onto a MTB bar or MTb ends onto a road bar. Your system sounds good.

Hi Matt

Here's a couple more pics.. you may have seen I've covered the same topic on Drops to Straights/Butterfly advice http://forum.ctc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=39777, but hope these help! Any joy with the barbag/velcro?

Aware that having the mapholder not horizontal isn't terribly aero.. but then, the air's then got to move round me, and I'm bigger and even less aero! :-D I can still see the map even at the higher angle.

Cheers

EDIT: topic link changed. Touch wood this'll go to the right place now.
