Shimano respaced to Campag

Post by garygkn »

I was looking at this:

http://wheelsmfg.com/content/view/525/40/

And it seemed a good idea as I have a double Campag but need some lower gears.
I have a set of Ultegra wheels in the loft if I re spaced an 8 speed Shimano cassette to 8 speed Campag I should be able to get something up to 32t that works on a 8 speed Campag system.

Has anyone any experience in this area?

No probs but you will probably not need to. Centre to centre of Campag cogs is 5mm, Shimano 4.8. The play in the chain should sort that out. I'm running a 8 speed Shimano cassette with 8 speed Campag shifters and it is great. Only issue might be if your rear mech can cope with the increase in rear cog size. You maybeed something other than a Campag but try it first. Mine was Ok. It even coped with a triple chainset really messing things up.

I did something similar but the other way.

I respaced a Campag 8sp cassette to suit a Shimano shifter and mech using (I think) Campag 9sp spacers and a spare cog to make up the difference.

I would agree with MATTSCCM. Just try the standard Shimano cassette.
If you respace to Campag' then the cassette will be wider which means less threads holding it in place.
Set the derailleur up on the middle cogs and it will be no more than 0.7mm out at the extreme ends.
These can be trimmed with the Hi/Lo screws if required.
If you set it up on the small cog then watch that the derailleur doesn't go into the spokes.!
A man can't have everything.
- Where would he put it.?.

Had a good look at what I have:

C9 chain
Daytona double chain set TA rings 48/40 9/10 speed
Campag 8 speed cassette 26T newish
Veloce 9 speed rear mech looks like a medium cage to me
105 double front mech
Mirage 8 speed ergo shifters

It all works don't know how?

I am hoping that the rear will cope with a triple Campag Racing T chainset 52/42/30
I plan to swap out the front mech for a Mirage 9 speed triple front mech.

The original rear hub won't stand a rebuild so I thought I may as well use my Ultegra wheels.

I have the same rear mech and it covers all sorts. Most extreme version tried was a 28/38/48 triple and a MTB 9 speed cassette. Obviously you had to avoid mid and outer rings with the 1st and 2nd rear but other wise it was OK. I was using a worn chain which gives a touch of play but it worked fine.
