Me neither.

However, whilst it's true to say that a tattoo is just ink under the skin - you still need a particular mindset to want one.

I think thirdcrank was making on play on tattoo being spelt with only one 't' in the middle and looking like a colloquialism for potato.

...maybe.

Not long ago they would have starred in a freak show.
Has evolution gone into reverse?
Do any members of this Forum sport tattoos? If so, I'm sure they're very discreet.

I can't believe that people STILL judge others by the way they look.
I haven't got any of the above, but I can see absolutely nothing wrong with self expression. They aren't asking you to copy them are they?
I love colourful people, I wouldn't want us to all look the same.

Anybody who thinks they don't make initial judgments based on appearance is deluding themselves. The important thing is to be aware of doing it.

Exactly.

Judging from quite a few of the responses, I'm probably getting increasingly out of touch with modern British society. However, only 20 years ago virtually everyone was slim, only women had metal objects stuck in or hanging from their ears, and by and large the only people who had tattoos were ex-forces personnel or criminals.
Now they're everywhere in combination! This is a relatively new phenomenon.
I find it extraordinary. Perhaps we're going back to our pre-Roman heritage when we painted our bodies. Would you be happy if your male doctor/dentist/lawyer/teacher/nurse/minister of religion were obese, AND wore ear jewellery and sported tattoes?
Apparently there's a high correlation between wearing tattoes, mental illness and criminality. That isn't to say of course that anyone with a tattoo has mental issues or has a tendancy towards criminal behaviour.
Having said that I try to take people as I find them and do my best to banish any preconceptions until proved otherwise. :)

1. I had my ear pierced at 11 (I didn't know anyone else who had their's done)
2. I had my nipple pierced at 22 (I didn't know anyone else who had their's done)
3. I have always wanted a tattoo. (I do know plenty of people who have tattoos, perhaps that's why I haven't got one yet)
4. I'm 38 and have a paunch.... that's why I started cycling.

I'm going to cycle JOGLE next June with 4 of my mates (non of which have any tattoos or piercing) to raise £10,000 for Cancer Research.
I thought I was one of the good guys  ... clearly I’m not cut out to be a cyclist... or perhaps I'm not cut out to read this forum

What difference would it make to you if they were tattooed ? as you might be surprised by the people that are.

And just to top this off you have now mentioned obese people, and again what difference would it make if they were ?

Me I have been morbidly obese, I have had piercings tongue and nipples, tattoos yes quite a few including one 1/4 body and others. I guess I am not up to your standards but would you know these things about me by just meeting me ...... my guess is that you wouldn't.

A timely piece in today's Guardian. Can't say I like the look myself.

Deluded? Not me.
I have worked with the general public since 1972. If I judged people, even initially, by their appearance, I wouldn't have a job.
I was sick of being judged for my appearance during my teens and twenties, so I made damn sure I never fell into the same trap.
