Bar bag problem due to STI brake levers

Post by Tom »

Does anyone know of any bar bag and support bracket that can be used on my bike that is fitted with Shimano 105 STI brake levers. I am having trouble due to cable intrusion.

I am now going down the line of maybe an up to date version of of a support bracket from wheel hub to brake securing bolt as was fitted to the old dawes touring bike front bag support back in the 80's

I have an Altura bar bag that works OK with STI's but it is an older model,I would think any bag thats not too big would do.

The only bar bag that I know of that will fit between STI levers on a drop handle bar bike without interfering with brake and gear selection/operation is the smallest in the range of Ortleib bags. If you want to fit a larger bag an easy way to do this is by re-routing the brake cables. The easiest way to do this is buy a couple of the small 90 degree tubes that are fitted to vee brakes, they go by the name of cable pipe or noodle. If you are not familiar with vee brakes these are fitted just where the cable clamps into the top of the cantilevers. If you fit one of these noodles on either side of the sti's at the point where the outer cable enters the lever this will then point your brake cables down and give you loads of room to fit any size handlebar bag. Make sure you put plenty of grease inside the noodle and they will work perfectly.

and theres always the old chestnut of replacing your shimano STIs with campag Ergos. 10 speed Ergos will work with 8 or 9 speed shimano systems without additional expense (see the ctc web technical pages)

As Pigman said. There's also those Nokon flexi cables which I believe help, but I also believe are hideously expensive.

The Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op sell a Vaude handlebar bag that is fairly small and compact.

I use a Topeak bag..its quite small but Ive found it OK for the items I want in the bag....wallet ,change, camera, passport ,air tickets, food etc

Topeak do another which converts to a bum bag which is a good idea

Ortlieb bar bags can be bought with an extended bracket which avoids your problem. The fixing bracket does away with the need to have extra braces.
