Triple to Double

Hi
my son-in-law has a Tiagra triple (50,39,30) on his road bike. He wants to fit a standard double (53/39). Can he use the existing triple front mech or will he need to get a new double?

Thanks

It would work but it might not shift as well as one for a double would. I would try it and see if it's good enough.

What Frank said. Front mechs are relatively cheap anyway. Plus ideally you want a shorter axle on the bottom bracket. If the inside ring is on a separate bolt circle then another option is to take it off, fit a new outer ring and try running it as a double!

I suggest he goes on our forum and tries to do a complete crankset, b-b and mech swap. There must be loads more CTC-ites in need of his lower gearing and only too pleased to get rid of their agonistic (if it aint hurting it aint working) racing doubles!

That shouldn't cost either party more than the postage.

A Tiagra triple front mech won't cope with a 53 ring... according to Shimano.
