I'm now passed 50...still 5ft 9ins...no longer run...but cycle a steady 250 to 300 miles a month...cycling every day...my legs are trim...but I weigh around 14 stone and my waist has grown to over 36 inches

Most of my current cycling is on the flat...and I work 5 days a week...9 to 5...at my desk

How much more cycling do I have to do to lose weight?

:)

I saw steady weight loss when I changed jobs and doubled my cycle commute to 11 miles each way.

I lost just under 2 stones over 18 months, I didn't change anything else in my lifestyle so still drank a little too much and still ate a little too much.

Like Mick I did an e2e last year (and met him at my start point, his mid point. I am of course refering to distance travelled, not body parts) and lost 13 lbs over 13 days at an average of 71 miles per day.

For most of my adult life I was alway eight and a half stone. About 20 years ago my wife bought a newsagents shop, which we had for two years.
I would sit in the shop and think 'I'll just try a Turkish Delight' or Lion bar or anything else that was for sale, only once or twice a day though.
After seeing a video of me from behind I tested the scales - 11 stone.
I've tried many miles at various speeds but to no avail, still 11 stone.
As someone said, and Gav is always telling me - muscle is heavier than fat. Therefore I think I must be full of muscle (Or full of something).
I think we have to resign ourselves to it

An interesting question and some very good sound advice. Don't forget the more you cycle the more you will improve your fitness level and increase body muscle (to a point). The more muscle you have the more calories you burn even at rest.

On a medical note fat around the waist is not good and I would suggest you look at your diet. Men suffer from fat deposited in this area of the body may increase risk of heart problems later in life.

Cycling to reduce weight.

I tried the exercise bike at the gym, last year. The floor was soaked in my sweat. In 3 months I never lost an ounce. Its dangerous to cycle with the sun low in the sky in winter, 2 men killed (Northants) being blinded by the sun. So this winter, I went back onto my low-milk low fat routine, and brisk walk 3 to 5 miles daily. I have powdered skimmed milk in tea, custard on trifle, no other milk. My porridge is made with water, with Muscavado sugar on top. Only eat pastry one meal a week, mostly Ryvita instead of bread, no cake, lots of home grown vegetables, and make 2 trifles a week for puddings. Its boring, but I have lost a stone in 3 months, which is the correct lossage if thats the right word ! Yesterday I lost control and ate a portion of supermarket chips, but found my stomach felt bloated the rest of the day. It would therefore seem that the stomach gets used to the weight losing eating programme, and doesnt want to be filled up ! Its important to record the brisk walking miles on the calendar every day , as it makes me nip out for an hour and do it. Good luck to all. Diane

p.s. It is not necessary to buy a pedometer to do the brisk walking routine. Measure the local distances on the car mileometer, then walk them and time it. I have short legs and brisk walk now at 20 mins per mile, so I know the routes exactly. A man with long legs and a woman with short legs will walk at seperate timings, so he will need to go further and meet her on the way back !
