Speeding in Oxfordshire up 88%
No surprise there Sherlock:

Just goes to show that drivers don't feel that they will now get caught speeding by traffic Police.

Interesting that brake had this to say about the accident stats for Swindon:
But Katie Shephard of road safety campaign Brake, which opposes camera removal, said: "There is a wealth of academic research that demonstrates that speed cameras are an effective way to reduce crashes and nine months is still too short a period to assess the situation in Swindon."
But a few days in Oxfordshire and they have a conclusion.

I thought exactly the same thing. What was it, 5 days? Yeah. Right, that'll really be a sound statistical analysis.
Re: Speeding in Oxfordshire up 88%
There is a skew factor in the Swindon case as Police have increased mobile camera and speed traps.
This has not happened in Oxfordshire.
This has not happened in Oxfordshire.
Re: Speeding in Oxfordshire up 88%
If they've got rid of the cameras, how do they know people are speeding? And if they know people are speeding, why aren't they prosecuting?
Cynic? No, an optimist tempered by experience.
Re: Speeding in Oxfordshire up 88%
Because you need a certain authority to do so?
It is relatively easy to get hold of a speed measuring device and measure speeds, but not easy to prosecute on the results.
Remember all the local groups who monitored their own roads - the Police would only write to offenders not prosecute

They know because they've not turned off the cameras just stopped fining people and taking photos.

Re: Speeding in Oxfordshire up 88%
Those caught speeding during the trial will not receive fines or points.
We should all be writing to the Oxon Chief Constable asking "why not", and "is it normal policy for Oxfordshire Constabulary to ignore people committing offences in front of their eyes?"
What manner of creature's this, being but half a fish and half a monster
Re: Speeding in Oxfordshire up 88%
BTW the cameras were set to trigger at 35mph so the article is inaccurate in saying the figures are for those breaking the 30mph limit. Those 'caught' were breaking the limit by a considerable margin.

Whats more important to you - safety or civil liberty? Thats what it boils down to. Personally i say civil liberty, and rather the cameras are gone, even though they dont snoop on cyclists.
What worries me is the slippery slope whereby the state keeps getting more snooping powers, and before you know it they're keeping facial recognition databases of us.

Nutsey,
I do hope that when you're lying broken and bleeding at the side of the road, you are pleased the motorist was at liberty to run you off the road at high speed.

I've edited your post to say it as it is.

Nonsense. Your not important enough - plus if anyone wanted to keep tabs on you your online presence says more about you than a handful of blurry pictures ever could.
I suggest if you're that worried you cancel all your web accounts and stay clear.
Re: Speeding in Oxfordshire up 88%
Dont sound so shocked. 59% of the voting public voted for parties promising to return some of their civil liberty.
Re: Speeding in Oxfordshire up 88%
Since when has committing a criminal offence been a civil liberty?

People generally vote for the party that isn't in power. That's how politics works in this country, policies are secondary unless you come up with some real stinkers then people don't care.
However it's good to see selfishness is back with a bang. It's almost like the 80's didn't happen...
