Hi nuke: sorry to hear, of course. Will look out. Can I ask what sort of locks if any you used - we keep ours in a garage too and I never feel 100% comfortable about it - I just wondered what the current security threshold was.

What a pain to have stuff pinched. Garage doors are notoriously flimsy, but its a real pain to lock up kids bikes to a secure wall anchor.
It doesnt sound like these bikes would fetch a lot of money for the trouble of breaking in, so I wonder why....
A junkie looking for the price of a score wouldnt be able to transport 3 bikes?
Somebody local wanting a bike for their child, might as well get the others?
In the school holidays, I think the shiny kids bike was the primary target.

I seem to remember being told that thieves drive round in vans to steal bikes, on housing estates in the summer holidays, and university residences in Fresher's week.

The Claud Butler the only one i have pictures of. If I can find the others I'll add.

Definitely nothing to do with the shop When I said as new, about the MTX. i meant it looked like it was just out of the shop it had not had much use yet. Sorry if I misled just a bit miffed. 3 bikes in one hit means there was more than 1 of them.

The hoods now have read insulating tape wrapped around them as they were wearing out

That's at least some good news nuke. Can I ask again if they were locked and with what - I am not suggesting they should have been even if they were not, just wondering which locks make any difference at all.

No they weren't locked and normally one of them sits outside. We have an enclosed garden and the bike normally reside in the workshop. Which is normally locked but the pad lock had frozen and I had got round to getting a new one I have now.

Thanks for that nuke. In other words you left them as a normal, trusting human being would do. Shame we can't be like that.

Thefts from garages do occur in various parts of the country. As 531colin pointed out, most garage doors are vulnerable but can be hardened by the use of internal locking devices which can be retro fitted. The aim is to secure the door internally and prevent access being gained by peeling the lower corners.

Make sure whichever product you use is rated by sold secure (www.soldsecure.com) and or have achieved standard LPS 1175.

I have heard of some people who have parked their car against their garage door to protect their bike (depends how much you love your car)!

For inside the garage I would recommend installing a motorcycle ground anchor and using a motorcycle chain and lock (all of which should be rated sold secure - gold).

Be careful to lock your bike(s) so that the chain is off the ground which will make it much more difficult to defeat.

If you use two different types of locks on your bike then it will act as a deterrant as different tools are required to defeat different locks. The chances are greater that the offenders will not have all the tools they need.

if you have an intruder alarm system in your home, then it might be possible to extend it into the garage. Alternatively, you can purchase a shed or garage alarm that is not monitored, but will make a loud enough noise to either deter the offender and / or alert you or your neighbours.

I hope this helps,

I will be uping security but this is not Manchester. they got in through the side door which I had inadvertently left unlocked. And I don't lock the bikes inside. Particualrly Childrens bikes you want them to use them and if they can't get to them they won't. It was silly not locking the sidedoor. But I need to keep bikes useable.
