My first ever drop-bar bike, a 15 gear Raleigh Weekender back in about 1985 had foam grips, bit icky when they got a soaking.

Cow horn handlebars. Fitted those to my Raleigh Europa
. I remember when the first matt black ones. Also what about those little alloy mudguards.

A perfect example of how giving something a name doesn't necessarily mean it will serve that purpose.

I still use handlebar foam, now nearly 20 years old, excellent stuff.

It says something about changing times that we've got to page three (perhaps I should say the third page) of a thread about bonk bags and bananas, without any nudge, nudge, wink, wink.
I'm pretty sure that when I was a lad, the problems caused by not eating enough when cycling were called 'knock' or more precisely 'hunger knock'. I probably got that expression from my dear old dad so it may well have been prevalent pre-war. I think of bonk bags as part and parcel with 'massed-start caps' which anywhere else in the world are, or were, just cycle racing caps. I may have led a sheltered life but I don't think that in those days bonk had any naughty connotations. The first time I remember seeing the word with that sort of meaning was on a headline of a report about Boris Becker in a broom cupboard.
So, I'll add massed-start caps to the nostalgia list, although I rarely found one to fit my 60cm bonce. (Heaven knows what drossall did.)

I'm 38 lol. Middle aged according to the BBC, it's 20 years since I worked in a bike shop and lots of things have changed hugely since then.
Just goes to prove my point, you're only a child.

So because I'm not going to be drawing my pension for an few years yet and can't remember when all cars had to travel behind a man carrying a red flag the nostalgia I feel is less valid?
Tut tut.

Re: Bonk bags, bunches of bananas and other not so old nostalgia
During an unsuccessful search of my stores today for something else, I came across a sprint carrier. Once a very common sight, especially on Sunday mornings, how often does anybody ride to an event carrying their race wheels nowadays?
(I'm also reminded that some people used to use eltonioni's flat stamped spanners as a substitute - probably the only thing they were much use for.)

I miss Kitching's Everything Cycling catalogue, back when it was mostly black and white line drawings rather than photographs and I miss Cycling Today magazine.
