Germany / Bavaria
Germany / Bavaria
We are hoping to holiday in bavaria next year combining circular day rides with mountain walking. Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions re location or circular one day rides, preferably on ashphalt / tarmac?
Re: Germany / Bavaria
Bavaria is a wonderful place to visit by bike. Plenty of excellent accommodation, although German campsites can be rather tailored towards caravans. For routes, just look in your atlas for major rivers. There are excellent cycle routes along most of them. It means you can cycle along the valleys but get views of the mountains at the same time. Upton Map Shop has probably got maps of the area. The "bikeline" route guides are excellent too. For inspiration, try looking at www.velotours.de or velociped.de (both have a button to take you to the English version). You may not wish to make use of their baggage carrying/accommodation booking/route planning, but if Velotours and Velociped go there, it is sure to be a scenic route. The photos on thir websites might also be of interest.
Re: Germany / Bavaria
I can recommend Bavaria, I`ve been holidaying there for 20 years. I`ve using Stephen Bent`s holidays, have a look at his routes on his website, bentstours.com
It will give you an idea of places of interest. There is some cycling maps made by the German cycle club which reprioritise the roads and show all the known cycle routes. There are 26 for the whole country,other maps I recommend are the Kompass which are more detailed for walking and cycling along tracks.As your cycling is on asphalt there is a fair selection but the better routes are on gravel tracks through the forests. Areas to look at are around Garmisch and Mittenwald. I have stayed several times in Wallgau .
Routes to look at are:- Mittenwald- Leutasch-Seefeld-Scharnitz-Mittenwald
Mittenwald- Wallgau-Vorderreiss-Hinterriss-Eng
Mittenwald= Wallgau-Vorderreis-Syvensteinsee-Lenggries-Jachenau-Walchensee-Wallgau-Mittenwald
Mittenwald-Wallgau -Walchensee-Wallgau Mittenwald
If you can travel on gravel tracks the classic day out is around the Zugspitze. Start at Garmisch (the lowest point !) - Mittenwald-Leutasch -Gaisertal (a 5 mile gravel track along a hidden valley no cars too long for walkers.) downhill to the top cable-car station then downhill on tarmac to Ehrwald - road or gravel track to Greisen-tarmac cyclepath to Garmisch.
The Eibsee is worth a visit uphill towards the Zugspitze.
Another area to look at is the Tegernsee ,there are routes towards the Spitzingsee
There is a wide range of accomodation , village gasthofs are suprisingly cheap. Food is good mainly beef and pork,and is good value for money Of course the BEER is great and I also recommend a daily intake of Apfelstrudel
