Just another of the hazards to beset you when you opt to sample the 'farcilities'! I think the only solution is a sort of caveat emptor - i.e. expect the worst when you're moving from the road onto a cycle path or vice versa, and angle your transition accordingly. At a sufficiently oblique angle, you won't have problems. Of course this means a drop in speed, but then again, cycle paths are built for slowth, not for speed...

There's the old cynic in me....

I'm also bemused by the remark about 'preventing water ingress'. Where I live, when there's water on the roads, it's usually fallen in a vertical direction from grey and white fluffy things up over one's head. I don't see how kerbs make any difference. Anyone know any different?

You would think when a seriously dangerous hazard like that is pointed out they should be doing something about it immediately even if that simply means going out and plonking a few cones, tape and a diversion sign. I believe with situations such as this where they are aware of a hazard, and did nothing about it, then the council can become liable if there is an accident here.

Saying "we'll put it on a list and get around to fixing it at some point" isn't good enough.

When they do get round to fixing it this is how they'll do it:

Even that would be better than just leaving it tbh.

Agreed. It is a lottery expecting the road surface to be an acceptable standard. The safest way is to always pay attention to the surface and avoid as far as possible going over anything which is a potential problem.

Unfortunately it is a huge list. Road/farcility transitions, white road markings/iron street furniture when wet, potholes, puddles of unknown depth, gravel, glass, mud, sand, etc. All to be spotted while watching surrounding traffic so as to have a chance of compensating for driver's mistakes.

Local authorities are good at providing pedestrian dropped kerbs. For wheelchair users, of course, even though they also don't pay road tax!

Because it's a legal requirement. I believe.

Yes. Quite right, too.

They build facilities that disabled people can use.

They build roads that cars can use.

They build cycle facilities that cyclists can't use without buckling wheels. (Or they build it right, then change it to be wrong.)
