What you need to do is to "boot" ie re-inforce, the inside of the tyre. Park sell really tough translucent patches for this job, but you dont actually need anything sticky if your boot is big enough and stiff enough to hold the tyre pressure. The best thing for the job is a 2 or 3 inch length cut from a tubular tyre and opened out, or a similar length of lightweight tyre. I have "got home" using a bit ripped off the mudflap, or a bit of rag. I'm sure tyres are better quality now than they were!
