Weinmann centrepulls work fine with good cables and blocks, they *will* stop you. That said, modern dual pivots are considerably better. More feel, more power, in fact they're not far off as good as 1980s cantilevers. I only use the latter now on a camping iron designed to carry serious weight in hill country, because it's difficult to find decent modern canti arms & the more modern types don't work well with drop levers.
If you have the money use the modern dual pivot technology, it works.

Hi again,

thanks all of you for your replies and advice, particularly mlteenie, I rang Condor cycles and bought the Acor dual pivot caliper brakes for £20.

I fitted the rear first and took it out for a ride today. Wow, major improvement, so much so that the rear now outperforms the front! Needless to say I'll be changing the front too, I only did the rear first in case I cocked it up and had to get to the lbs safely!

Best of all the brakes have so much reach that I can easily fit 700c wheels in the future should I need to.

Cheers folks.
