The "Bump" button.

I've just noticed the 'Bump' button. I understand that bumping a topic means posting to get it back to the top and is preferred to a new post which duplicates the first. As I've nothing I want to 'Bump' (or at least, not on here) can I ask, purely from idle curiosity what it does? If it just takes the thread back to the top, it won't, as recommended, make the offer a bit more interesting to potential buyers or sellers so if that's all it does, what's the point?
Incidentally, I hope this is a fairly recent innovation. If it's always been there my need for new specs is greater than I thought.

I bookmarked an old thread I started about video strategy. (As I post now I think it's at the top or near it, and for no obvious reason to the casual viewer.
When I went back to it through control panel one of the buttons offered was 'bump thread'. I didn't want to bump it so I posted my enquiry. To prove my point in view of your reply, (in spite of just having had a sherry

) I clicked on it. The thread was bumped to the top and the last post had a little line across the bottom in the same style as when it records an edit. Thinking I was being rather smart I posted on the thread but when that post appeared, the line about "Last bumped by thirdcrank..." had disappered leaving me rather confused, and even more miffed, so I deleted my triumphalist post.
Apart from that, please be reassured that I accept your decision on this 100%. I'll go and lie down

Thirdcrank - he's fibbing.
There is a "bump topic" button at the top of the posts - but it's only there if it's your thread.
(I've just had a swig of the sweet stuff too - so it could be that)

PS.
Just seen it!
Why does it exist?
What's wrong with putting a new message up?

This is my thread and I can't see a bump button at the top or bottom. On the occasions I have seen it, it's been on the bottom line, to the right of the buttons for bookmark and subscribe.
Edited to add
I see kwackers has bumped his new camera thread. I can see the message
Last bumped by kwackers on Wed Dec 08, 2010 7:31 pm.

My bumped camera thread no longer has the option. (Other threads further down of mine do though)
There's probably some time limit or some such, you probably can't see anything on this because its too new or too near the top of the topic?

This Bump Button is open to misuse.
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3786&p=31062#p31062There's nothing to stop people from continually bumping their threads.

Found it. It's on my 2008 post cadging TCs battery charger (thanks again, it's in use right now!) but not on today's post about alkaline batteries failing at -13C on the way to work. So yes there appears to be a time element.

We now need somebody with a constant stream of posts over a fairly prolonged period to work out the cut off point. We'll have to think a bit to see if anybody fits the description.

In the meantime, I'm off for another sherbet.

I don't suppose there's any real difference from the old method of posting a new message in the thread:-
<BUMP>
It's still obvious who bumped it!

There's me worrying about contradicting the Chief Mod over this, and now you are contradicting one of his main deputies.
I'm accepting the suggestion that my illusionary bump button was caused by my over-imbibing (and humbly grateful to be reminded of the safe drinking guidelines.) I agree that this non-existant button is, nevertheless open to widespread abuse and again humbly apologise for publicising the fact that it doesn't even exist.

PS I hope goatwarden will note I drink and bang on in more than one snug on the forum.

I can edit any of my posts without a message saying I've edited them. Something to do with my Spambuster position. However, when I Bump, it notifies in the post.
I would suggest that 30 days is the cut-off for allowing the Bump Button. 30 days is the cut off for "For Sale etc" to be removed without activity.
Auto-deletion
Once a topic has become inactive for 30 days it will be automatically deleted.

I can edit any of mine without leaving a trace, and I'm just an ordinary pleb.
