I like to use a map as it's more fun and it gives you a nice sense of achievement when you get from point A to B using a route you planned yourself.
I agree, but to use a GPS map is fun too, and you can plan your own route.
Paper maps have been around for more years than the bicycle, and even people with great skill can get lost. Belt and braces is the best way - have both.
