Friends???
Friends???
OK, so I have a confession, I'm really getting to dislike Facebook.
All sorts of reasons and I might cancel my account with it, but the one that's on my mind right now is the concept of the 'Friend' who I share experiences and contact with. To me a friend is someone who I share a strong bond with, we share joys and troubles, we keep confidences. If somethings bothering me, we chew it over with some mugs of tea, or pints of beer. So what I want to know is, why does some 17yr old in Germany who puts films of riding his motorbike on Youtube, want to be my 'friend'? I do not know who he is, he is young enough to be my grandson. Is Youtube taking some lessons from Facebook? Can someone please shed som light on what is going on here?

Re: Friends???
I dont think that you can actually leave Facebook, there is no escape.
You can check out any time you want but you can never leave.
That is how they have so many members, just one little peek and you are a member forever.
Friends are a bit like Top Trump Cards or Scout Badges, you just collect as many as you can get. Like bankers with money.
Will you be MY friend. Please, I dont have many.
Oh, I just remembered I dont have many because I only let my real friends be friends.

I'm not too keen on yellow diesel, its a bit like yellow snow, you shouldn't not never touch it!
Red friends are OK but they can track you down a bit too easy!
Are you actually on Facebook?
No, but I do like to get my face in a book from time to time

Re: Friends???
I joined Facebook to find out what the son is doing. If we do not hear from him for a while I put a whatever it is called on his page "You dead yet" (no reference to the other thread.)
He normally phones within a few days.
I do not understand the friends thing there. Messages from people you cross the street to avoid. They normally catch me holding the lamp post trying to cross the road. Some do not help (not a freind), some help me over (worse I can not get rid of them).
Others from young people who know the son and even worse friends of friends on Facebook.
I have lots of wanna be friends on a big list, is that how to tell how popular you really are.

Re: Friends???
Well I have 'ignored' said person. Real friends can be counted on one hand.
The other reason why I hate Facebook is because of how it is used by certain people are using it.
It's like a constant spewing of verbal effluent.
"I have just mown the lawn/finished marking homework/poured myself a drink"
" Oh @*&%$$£@"
"John and mary are now friends"
"Susan is a level 10 grand wizard"
and so on, and so on!
"So What! Do you think I care what you are doing" I cry across the room, to which comes the reply, "Dont reply, you will offend someone."
Anyway, winge over. Perhaps I should be on Grumpy Old Men.
Time to ride to work, Ta ta.

Re: Friends???
I allow myself to be 'friended' all the time (usually by workmates/ex workmates), I just don't bother logging on and looking to see what they're all up to (unless I'm very bored). However should I ever need 'help' from my "friends" then I'll know where to find them.
Mind you, sometimes when I'm in my workshop happily machining away at my latest steam engine parts and contemplating whether I should get a life a quick scan of facebook is enough to make me realise that at least mowing the lawn isn't the most exciting thing that's happened to me all week.

Re: Friends???
I agree it's mostly rubbish. I do enjoy being able to view photos from cycling trips I've been on with friends when they upload them to fb.
Mostly I enjoy being given the opportunity to extract the Michael from friends when they post some of their ridiculous statuses. It also appears to me some folks use it simply to boast. Frank and Sue are having a great trip to Paris, our third this year. Bill has just collected his new car.
As for the games, I never respond to ' Jim wants you to join him in Mafia world' or ' Olga has invited you to be her slave in foot fetish world' No wait I did join that one.

Re: Friends???
I use facebook to keep in touch with family 4000 miles away. But some people do seem to post streams of inane drivel. I have to admit I don't understand that aspect. Don't they have something more interesting to do? Cycling forums to browse, or something?
